On April 4, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) hosted a West Fernie Servicing Project Open House at the Park Place Lodge.
The RDEK has awarded the contract for construction of Phase 2 of the project, which is worth $4.7 million to Hazelwood Construction Services Inc. Hazelwood Construction spokesperson Mike Clarke announced the start date of construction as later this month. The expected date of completion is mid-September.
“It’s a lot of work in a short window of time,” he said.
Clarke said construction would be conducted one street at a time to limit interruptions to residents.
Work will start with Colclough Ave., followed by Hand Ave., Glover Street and Beaver Street. Crews will then turn their attention to Beach Ave. and Stewart Ave. before turning south to work on McLeod and MacDonald Avenues and Sparling Road.
He said construction should last between three to four weeks per street.
The work will involve an upgrade to underground infrastructure including 2200 metres of sanitary mains, 2000 metres of water mains and 1200 metres of storm mains
In addition, full road upgrades will be completed including the laying of 18,700 square metres of asphalt and all associated grading, accesses and highway interfaces.
