West Kelowna fire crews responded to a routine fire report last night and uncovered a grow op in the process.
At around 9 p.m. Tuesday night West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a report of a basement fire in the 3000 Block of Ranch Road in Glenrosa, said Darren Lee the assistant chief.
“The initial arriving crew made an interior attack from a basement door, where they discovered a marijuana grow operation. The attack crew backed out to a safe position and deployed an aerosol fire suppression device to knock the fire down,” said Lee.
Once BC Hydro crews were able to disconnect the homes electrical service, attack crews moved back inside to suppress the remaining fire.
“A lone occupant was home at the time of the fire and was alerted by working smoke alarms in the home,” said Lee.
“No injuries were reported at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental and fire inspectors will attend the scene in the morning to conclude the investigation.”
West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded with three engines and one command unit. A total of 14 firefighters were supported by West Kelowna RCMP, BC Ambulance, BC Hydro and Fortis Gas.
