The West Kootenay Friends of Refugees are still waiting to hear when refugees from Syria and Eritrea will arrive.
The Abdin family from Syria is currently going through security checks, but a representative of the WKFoR says this is no cause for concern. Still, the group isn’t sure how much longer it will be before the family arrives in Canada.
The WKFoR has also applied to sponsor the father of an Eritrian family already living in Rossland. Right now the group is waiting for him to complete a face-to-face interview before his visa can be approved. Unfortunately he’s currently in Uganda, and the nearest visa office is hundreds of miles away in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Visa officers are sometimes sent out on field trips, but the WKFoR have no idea how long it might be before that happens.
The WKFoR has also just begun helping the San Latt family from Burma with the paperwork to sponsor Lun Lun San’s brother, who already has refugee status from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
