Construction will begin this week on landscape improvements at the Westbank Cemetery, 3200 Elliott Rd., with the project expected to continue to May 30.
The project is part of the district’s Westbank Cemetery Strategy and includes the planting of trees, shrubs and grass seeding to bring the dry, gravel cemetery to a more park-like setting.
Normal cemetery functions will be unaffected by the construction, with temporary quiet periods in construction to respect burial services.
Residents can expect to see crews and equipment accessing the cemetery via Elliott Road and crossing Elliott at the entrance to the cemetery. The district apologizes for any inconvenience as a result of this construction.
Earlier this year, the district installed new columbariums and mausoleums at the cemetery and is now selling niches and crypts.
The columbariums and mausoleums are located on wheelchair-accessible concrete bases.
The Westbank Cemetery was established in 1925. The cemetery is the traditional resting place for community families and pioneers.
The Westbank Cemetery Strategy, adopted in 2012, is intended to increase the life of the facility, which was facing a shortage in available plots.
The strategy also intends to convert the cemetery to a self-sustaining operation.
