Westwold suspects arrested

A road block with spike belt was set up on Highway 97 and the suspect vehicle went over the belt.

Two people were taken into custody after an allegedly stolen vehicle was stopped by an RCMP spike belt near Westwold Monday.

The incident happened at around 2:30 p.m.

“We received a report of a vehicle on Crown land near Falkland not really moving, and the complainant gave us the licence plate number,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy. “The plate came back as a vehicle stolen out of Summerland.”

An RCMP helicopter happened to be in the area so it went to have a look for the vehicle, which was found to be mobile and being driven in a dangerous manner, said Noseworthy.

A road block with spike belt was set up on Highway 97 near Westwold and the suspect vehicle went over the belt.

“The vehicle was spiked, and it ended up going off the road and it flipped,” said Noseworthy.

The two occupants of the vehicle – a 30-year-old man and 34-year-old woman – were not injured. They were arrested and remain in custody.

Charges have yet to be forwarded to Crown counsel as the matter remains under investigation.

Traffic was stopped on the highway in both directions as police conducted the road block.
