City of White Rock staff will take a closer look at the procedures bylaw for its board of variance, following support of a motion by Coun. Helen Fathers.
Last week, council voted unanimously (with Coun. Grant Meyer absent) in favour of the review.
According to the motion, the review is to include “a detailed outline regarding the circumstances a board of variance application can be made and by whom.”
Fathers brought it forward out of concern with the approval last month of an application that didn’t appear to meet the board’s criteria of “undue hardship.”
It was to enable a home to be built with a three-car garage, she said, noting she was also concerned a prospective buyer was able to jointly apply for the variance.
Fathers told Peace Arch News the review is not about blaming the three-member board.
“They made the decision on the information they were given,” she said. “It’s absolutely our process that needs tightening.”
Fathers’ motion directs staff to report back to council at the next meeting, set for May 26.
