White Valley rec fees increase

Group rentals of fields, tennis courts, arena, pool and curling rink climb in Lumby

Lumby and Cherryville residents will have to dig a little deeper for some recreational activities.

The White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee approved a 2.4 per cent fee increase Monday.

“With wages, utilities and materials, it actually comes up to four per cent but it was felt by the committee that we should be prudent as possible given the economic circumstances,” said Rick Fairbairn, chairperson.

The hike impacts group rentals of sports fields, tennis courts, the White Valley Community Centre, Pat Duke Memorial Arena, the Lumby Curling Rink and the pool.

However, there is some good news.

With the HST being eliminated April 1, 2013 (and replaced with PST), general admissions to use the pool or arena will actually see a slight drop.

General admissions do not include tax, therefore as an example the rate for adult pool fees will be $3.35 after the HST is removed (down from $3.60, which includes the 2.4 per cent increase and HST).

Fairbairn admits there is a concern about the future of parks and recreation and the ability to maintain facilities.

“The cost for the average person to participate in sports is expensive and we are seeing declining enrolment in some programs,” he said.

“There must be a balance between what we charge and increasing participation.”
