A movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Cloverdale this week, filming scenes for the upcoming action-comedy, Why We’re Killing Gunther.

While it’s unlikely the Terminator and former Californian governor will be making an appearance – reports say he has wrapped his Vancouver scenes and has left town – the production seems likely to create a sensation in Surrey’s historic town centre.

The filming notice for the Cloverdale shoot calls for explosions, gunfire and even a car stunt along 176 Street, where the production will be filming interior and outdoor scenes.

Why We’re Killing Gunther is written and directed by SNL’s Taran Killam, who also acts in the picture along with his real-life co-star, Vancouver’s Cobie Smulders (Avengers, How I Met Your Mother) and SNL alum Bobby Moynihan.

It’s a banner year for TV and film production in Surrey, enjoying a record busting season that’s already outpaced 2015 with more than 100 film permits issued by late July, according to the Surrey Film Office.

The production will be closing down 57 Avenue between 176 Street and 176A Street from Aug. 16 to Aug. 20. Some parking availability will also be affected, although intermittently.

Neighbouring businesses have also been told to expect occasional special effects and gunfire.

The Vault Restaurant is one of the interior locations, as is a second floor apartment at the corner of 176 Street and 57 Avenue. The production was also set to spend much of Tuesday filming at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.
