Widespread power outage in Greater Vernon

B.C. Hydro says the incident occurred when a truck got caught in electricity lines

The lights are off in a large portion of Greater Vernon.

B.C. Hydro reports that electricity went out at 12:37 p.m. Thursday for about 1,900 customers after a dump truck tore down a line on Highway 6, at Coldstream Ranch.

“Crews are trying to restore it as quickly as possible,” said Dag Sharman, community relations manager.

It’s estimated that power could be back on by 4 p.m., although some areas may see electricity return earlier.

The boundaries of the outage are east of College Way, south of Pottery Road, west of Buchanan Road and north of Cosens Bay Road.

“It’s a large area,” said Sharman.

Among those impacted are Vernon Secondary School, Coldtream Elementary and Kalamalka Secondary.

Sharman says there is little that can be done to avoid incidents where vehicles come in contact with the power grid.

“When something like this happens, we are just happy that no one is injured because there are live lines involved,” he said.
