The expenditure and donation reports for the Qualicum Beach candidates in the 2011 municipal election are in and are available to the public at town hall.
Top of the list in last November’s campaign was Dave Willie, at $7,369.23 (he spent $7,257.65 of that).
Willie, now a town councillor, was followed by unsuccessful mayoral candidate Mike Wansink and councillors Bill Luchtmeijer, Mary Brouilette and Scott Tanner.
See the chart for each candidates’ election expenses and campaign contributions.
Notable in the lists of campaign contributions is Kelland Foods (Quality Foods parent company). They contributed money ($1,000 in most cases) to each of the four winning council candidates.
Councillors Luchmeijer, Willie and Brouilette also share other campaign donors: Doyle Construction, Amplio Developments, and list personal and in-kind donations from various members of the Dutton and McKinley families.
Mayoral candidates Wansink and Teunis Westbroek list mainly donations from only themselves (although Wansink also received a donation from Christopher Lee). Westbroek spent only $535.31 on his campaign.
The mayor told The News that he doesn’t accept campaign donations — but begrudges no one who does so.
Richard Mennie spent the least overall on his campaign — a mere $350.10.
Most common expenditures in the reports were advertising, signs, brochures, bank fees and supplies.
Brouilette listed $115.21 spent on election workers (door-knockers) and $361.63 for a post-election party.
