Are there any potential wind warriors in Deep Bay? Perhaps not now, says Roz Lewis, but that could soon change.

The commodore of the Deep Bay Yacht Club this week said her group has decided to restart their Wind Warriors sailing program in July after an absence of four years.

“We put it on hold four years ago because the clubhouse was falling apart,” Lewis said. “Now that we have the new facility, we wanted to bring it back.”

The course is geared for youths aged 12 to 16 years and, she said, will teach students the basics of sailing lasers.

“Hopefully, by the end, they will be able to sail a laser successfully,” she said. “They learn about sailboats, names of the parts of the boat, proper terms, the wind and about four or five of the knots they need to know.”

A maximum of six students will be able to take part in each of four, four-day sessions, starting on July 4, 11, 18 and 25.

“This is being done inside the bay, right out from the clubhouse,” she said. “They will end up going in the water because they have to  turn the boat over so they know how to get back up.”
