Woman found dead in Burnaby RCMP jail cell after 2nd arrest: Police watchdog

Mounties say she was arrested twice

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman was found dead in an RCMP jail cell.

Burnaby RCMP say officers were called for a disturbance on Skyline Drive on March 6 around 7:50 p.m., where they arrested a woman. She was put into one of the detachment’s jail cells, “without incident.”

The woman was released the following morning, but she was re-arrested less than hour later for allegedly causing a disturbance on Moscrop Street.

She was put back in the jail cells, but during a regular cell check she was found to not be breathing. Police say the woman received “immediate” medical attention, but she died in the cell.

Police did not say how long she was in the cell for before the regular check.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate.
