Beginning on September 11, Kicking Horse Culture and the Art Gallery of Golden are hosting a number of artist’s workshops that will help people in the community build on their own skills and styles, learning from the pros.
Last year, Kicking Horse Culture received a grant to host the sold-out workshops for the community. This year, there will be a fee just to cover the costs of hosting the workshops.
“There’s always something to learn from someone,” said Kicking Horse culture executive director Bill Usher.
The workshops are hosted by a number of different people from the community who have been making a name for themselves in the Canadian art scene, and a special guest from New York City, New York.
With four workshops, they begin on September 11 with Kristy Gordon from Nelson. She has spent seven years living in New York and showing her work. She presents “fundamental principles of various paint application techniques.”
“Her work is just phenomenal,” Usher said.
Local artist Jayne Baun will show artists “Illustration – Layering techniques with pencil crayon and watercolours.” Baun paints and sells her work in Golden. Her workshop is hosted on Wednesday, September 18.
The third workshop, hosted by Regan Johnston on Wednesday, September 25, is “How to paint wildlife – Step by step.”
“Jayne Baun and Regan Johnston have really made a mark for themselves, not only in Golden, but across Canada,” Usher said.
Finally, Krys Sikora and Denise English will team up to teach people “Watercolour Batik,” a technique used to achieve texture in painting, on Wednesday, October 2.
“They can work on the techniques these folks are teaching and on a smaller format,” Usher said, adding that the upcoming I Like It Anonymous art show features works on eight inch by eight inch canvasses and wood.
Each of the artists will show the audience what works for them in their style.
“These are people who are doing really, really good work,” Usher said.
