The Writ of Election was issued today to begin the election period for the 40th general provincial election for British Columbia.
The writ was issued to the 85 District Electoral Officers throughout the province.
In Smithers, there are four candidates vying for the Stikine riding, incumbent Doug Donaldson represents the New Democratic Party, Sharon Hartwell represents the Liberal Party, Jonathan Dieleman represents the Conservative Party and Rod Taylor represents the Christian Heritage Party.
Additional candidates have until 1 p.m. April 26 to get their paperwork in.
Although general voting takes place Tuesday, May 14, 2013, eligible voters can vote ahead of election day.
Voters who will be away can request a vote by mail package, or vote in advance May 8 – May 11, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at advance voting locations.
Voters who have registered will receive a notice in the mail indicating where they can vote in their riding. However, registered voters can vote anywhere in the province.

Voters must provide proof of identity and residential address to receive a ballot.
