Wrongful dismissal claim settled

Greater Victoria Victim Services reaches settlement with its former executive director, Geraldine Glattstein.

Greater Victoria Victim Services reached a settlement with its former executive director, Geraldine Glattstein, avoiding Supreme Court and Human Rights Tribunal hearings this spring.

Glattstein was fired in September 2009.

She suffered a head injury and victim services said she couldn’t adequately perform her job.

Glattstein received her dismissal notice 24 hours after a meeting she had with agents under then-solicitor general Kash Heed.

Her complaint to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal and B.C. Supreme Court stated she was wrongfully dismissed.

Glattstein said in an interview Tuesday, she believes she was dismissed in an effort to silence her complaints about victim surcharge money being redirected from B.C. victim services agencies.

“That’s what I’m gong to be pursuing now is the solictor general’s involvement to silence someone,” said Glattstein.

She is working with a lawyer and plans to sue the provincial government.

Asked why she settled, rather than finishing the hearings and making the results public, Glattstein said, “I’m exhausted and I’m broke. I’ve been dragged through this for almost two years. I needed to move on with my life and I couldn’t do it anymore. It was killing me and it was killing my family.”

Details of the settlement were not released.

A spokesperson for Greater Victoria Victim Services was unavailable to comment.
