Looking back at what made headlines in 2018 from the pages of the Eagle Valley News.

Here’s a glimpse from January 2018:

A new restaurant and liquor outlet are among the businesses considered for a new commercial retail building proposed for Sicamous.

At their regular meeting Wednesday, Jan, 10, Sicamous’ mayor and council will be deliberating a development permit request, with variances, for construction of a building at 907 Trans-Canada Highway Frontage Road, located next to the Esso/A&W.

The applicant wants to construct a 60-seat restaurant and two retail spaces.

Many Shuswap homeowners will find their property value has increased by more than 10 per cent over last year.

BC Assessment has completed its assessment roll for 2018, in which the independent Crown corporation provides an estimate of your home and others in your neighbourhood.

Sicamous property values jumped by 13 per cent, pushing a home assessed at $313,000 in 2017 up to $355,000.

The District of Sicamous will be giving out more than $35,000 to local community groups in 2018, including the Sicamous & District Seniors Centre Society ($2,625); Eagle Valley Transportation ($10,000); Eagle Valley Community Support Society ($5,000); Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club ($8,245); Sicamous Community in Bloom Project ($750); Eagle Valley Rescue Society ($5,000); and the Sicamous and District Museum & Heritage Society ($3,750).

Former Sicamous Eagle Deryk Engelland’s career has taken on a new life as defenceman for the Vegas Golden Knights and spokesperson for the community. He was featured prominently in a Rogers Hometown Hockey video released Dec. 31, which centres around the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting that left 58 people dead and 546 people injured.

Trooper is going to raise a little hell to help celebrate Waterway Houseboat’s 50th anniversary.

The Sicamous houseboat company announced the Canadian rockers will be playing a free concert on Shuswap Lake on Saturday, May 19.

Cold bats, chilled mitts and colourful team uniforms made for good times at the second annual SnowPitch Tournament in Sicamous over the weekend. Taking first place to win the Twin Anchors houseboat trip was the Snow Pounders from Kelowna. K-towns’ I’d Hit That slid into second place, with Duck Dynasty, including players from Salmon Arm and Canoe clinching third.

Accused drug smuggler Colin Martin has pleaded not guilty in U.S. court to a charge relating to a cross-border drug smuggling operation.

Martin turned himself in to Canadian authorities in December after unsuccessful attempts at appealing a Supreme Court of Canada decision that he be extradited to the U.S. for prosecution in relation to an alleged conspiracy to traffic cocaine, marijuana and MDMA or ecstasy.

Sicamous residents had an opportunity to learn how the Bruhn Bridge replacement project is progressing at an upcoming open house.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) says the project is in a preliminary design phase with two bridge-replacement options on the table.

“The open house will seek input from the public on these two options,” states an MOTI press release. “This input will help inform the ministry before it selects one of the two options to construct.”

The days of boil-water advisories and taps running dry for residents along Solsqua-Sicamous Road are coming to an end. District of Sicamous council has awarded the construction of a waterline to KLL Construction. The winning bid, totalling $318,420, was the only one of six to come under the $365,000 project budget. The project will connect Solsqua-Sicamous Road properties to the district’s water treatment plant.

An RCMP helicopter was a sight for sore eyes Monday morning for two snowmobilers who spent the night outdoors on Owlhead.

At 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, Shuswap Search and Rescue received a report of two Alberta snowmobilers who had gone missing on the mountain that afternoon. The RCMP helicopter located both men at approximately 10 a.m., about five kilometres south of the chalet.

Sicamous RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the missing men, a 25-year-old from Calgary and a 27-year-old from Rocky View, were both well-equipped with adequate clothing, survival gear and food.
