Just because you eat something doesn’t mean you digest it.

So says Van Clayton Powel, author of You Are Not What You Eat, who will give a free presentation about his book Aug. 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Courtenay library.

As opposed to eliminating foods from their diet, the book explains how people can start putting foods back into their diet.

Powel is a former psychiatric nurse who specialized in addictions treatment and emergency psychiatric assessments. The Whistler resident spent time in Asia studying traditional medical systems, martial arts and yoga. Plagued with his own chronic digestive problems, Powel discovered the solution was not what he ate but how he ate.

“As a result of following these techniques that I learned when I lived in Asia, I can eat anything I want again. It was kind of an inspiration for the book was recognizing that if I’d known this stuff earlier my own problems would have been a heckuva lot shorter.”

Powel has been presenting at libraries in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. He is in Campbell River Tuesday and Nanaimo Wednesday.

“So far the response has been amazing,” he said, noting standing room only at his Burnaby presentation. “It seems to be striking a chord.”
