Young woman fights off armed robber

A 22-year-old woman fought off a knife-wielding robber Friday night after the man attempted to steal her cell phone.

The woman had been on the Lochside Trail before exiting onto Leslie Drive around 8 p.m. when she was approached by a teen wearing a balaclava. He produced a knife and threatened the woman.

“Initially she thought this was some kind of joke, but then he proceeded to grab for her electronics,” Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.

She instinctively reacted and pushed the would-be thief in the chest, sending him running.

He is described as being high school aged, skinny and 5’6″ or 5’7″ tall wearing dark clothing.

“Although her actions are laudable, attempting to fight back in a scenario like that can increase your risk for injury,” Jantzen said. “Sustaining an injury for a cell phone, or iPod or a small quantity of cash is not something we’d wish to see.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police at 250 475-4321.
