Every Saturday, the Captial News will feature stories from the week.

1. Peachland residents concerned with the impact clear-cut logging will have on the district’s watershed and wildlife have ramped up an information campaign in an attempt to deal with issues they say could be caused by logging in the area.

The newly-formed Peachland Watershed Protection Alliance has raised issues about logging in the area around Peachland, where four companies are planning work in the area: Ntityix Resources (Westbank First Nation), Crown corporation BC Timber Sales, Gorman Brothers Logging and Tolko Industries Ltd.

2. Postponed fireworks from Canada day are set to go off tonight.

According to Renata Mills of Festivals Kelowna, in addition to live entertainment between 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., there will also be dancing in the park, the “full arsenal” of the city’s Play In The Park program with fun activities for kids and plenty of food trucks on hand for those who get hungry.

The evening will be capped off with the firework show starting at 9:30 p.m., this year choreographed to music that will feature a coast-to-coast theme representing Canada’s 150 birthday.

4. The City of Kelowna says it has made what it describes as a “significant” land acquisition at the north end of Kelowna.

City hall said Friday it has bought of 140 acres at 4690 Highway 97 North for $11 million.

“As our city continues to grow, large parcels of land give us the flexibility to meet future community needs,” said Mayor Colin Basran. “The property is close to the (UBC Okanagan) university campus, the city landfill and the international airport and has features that could help with flood protection.”
