Florence Edna Boyes (Lybarger)

December 2, 2023
In loving memory ~
93 years young
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Florence Edna Boyes (Lybarger) on December 2, 2023, at her home in Sicamous, BC,
Mom was born in Midnight Lake, Saskatchewan on November 22, 1930. She was the seventh of eight children. Her family moved to the Malakwa area via train when she was 9 years old. They lived in Craigellachie on Lybarger Rd. which was named after her family. At age 14 mom burnt this house to the ground while making cookies. Something she got much better at as time went on. At age 15 she met our Dad, Ken Boyes and they were married 3 years later, on December 11, 1948. She spent the next 40+ years in Malakwa before making the move to Sicamous.
Throughout Mom’s life, she had many great accomplishments. To name a few, she raised 4 children, opened and operated the gift and info building at the Last Spike where she wore her self-made beautiful costume dresses and hats from that historical era. She hosted many International Bus Tours at her home to teach about the Last Spike and our area plus travelled to many Home Shows in North America promoting both the Last Spike and our beautiful Shuswap. She planted trees for Forestry, worked at 3 Valley Gap and was a Teachers’ Aid at Malakwa School.
She was a passionate gardener, athletic, musical and had a great sense of humour. She was a master at DIY projects and an excellent problem solver. Mom loved her home and she loved animals of all shapes and sizes but more than anything else she loved her family.
Florence is predeceased by her parents, 6 older sisters, her first husband Ken Boyes, second husband Keith McColl, fiancé Ken Nistor and her eldest son, Darryl Boyes.
She is survived by her children Derek (Peg), Debbie and Deanna. Grandchildren Alexis (Ed), Andrew, Chad (Tanya), Chris (Courtney), Madelynn and Tony as well as eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her only brother Dan Lybarger and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank her neighbours in the Eldorado Mobile Home Park in Sicamous for keeping a watchful eye on Mom. With their help, Mom continued living independently in her home and tending to her much-loved yard filled with beautiful flowers and vegetables. This meant so much to her and we are greatly appreciative.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Malakwa in July 2024 on a date yet to be determined.
