60 in 60 Blog, Week 17

Hot potatoes

The following is our latest blog entry to our 60 in 60 challenge. For those of you who missed our October column (see bit.ly/1LqaMVq) Erica and I have embarked on a journey to lose 60 pounds (combined) in 60 weeks (combined). We have weekly online updates and monthly submissions into the Record newspaper. It’s been 17 weeks since we started.

Terry: I think I held on to a couple of potatoes.

Erica: I knew we shouldn’t have picked them up!

T: For those of you who missed our last newspaper article, we showed what our weight loss looked like, by using potatoes. We took a picture with four 10-pound bags. That’s how much weight we lost in the first half of our challenge. But I came crashing back to earth. I had my worst week ever last week. I gained 1.4 pounds since our last blog.

E: And I have not lost much at all.

T: You have some excuse for not losing. You were sick and then you were entertaining your son for 10 days so you rarely accompanied me to the gym. But I was faithful about going to the gym, and that’s what’s so frustrating.

E: Maybe your running does more than you realize. You have had to stop that recently.

T: Yes. I’ve been getting some pain in my hips when I run. So much so that I actually had to stop running. But I replaced it with the less impactful elliptical. And I thought I was actually doing more on the elliptical than I was on the trails. But apparently not.

E: Maybe it’s all turning to muscle?

T: (Looking down at his belly) I just don’t see it.

E: We have eaten more in the last 10 days, and I got caught having a cookie after church last week. No sooner had I picked it up than someone said “You can’t be having that! What will your readers think?” But it was my favourite kind, and I had already touched it, so I ate it anyway.

T: No more excuses. Now that our visitor has gone it’s time to get back on track.

E: It’s tempting to lose heart. We started so well, but I think we just have to keep at it.

T: The good news is that the treadmill is fixed at the gym so we can go back to side by side exercising. You on the treadmill and me on the elliptical. And I started swimming a little bit….a very little bit.

E: And you got out skiing a couple of times too.

T: Yes, but the contents of my wineskin probably negated any calorie loss from the exercise.

E: Oh Terry!

T: Well it was the weekend after all.

E: Maybe we need to cut back on the weekends too?

T: Blasphemy!

E: Well, we will see what going back to a week of our more usual routine does for us. I would like to be holding up more bags of potatoes in a few weeks.

T: As opposed to holding on to them…

E: Yes!

T&E Thanks for reading. See you next week.
