60 in 60 blog, Week 2

Weight-loss nation grows by 2

The following is our second blog entry to our 60 in 60 challenge. For those of you who missed our column 2 weeks ago (see bit.ly/1LqaMVq) Erica and I have embarked on a journey to lose 60 pounds  (combined) in 60 weeks (concurrent). We will have weekly online updates and monthly submissions into the Record newspaper.

Drum roll please….

(sorry, we can’t do that. You’ll have to make that sound yourself before you read the next line. OK go ahead. We will wait)

Week 2 is in the books.

Weight loss during week 2:   2.2 pounds.

Erica: That’s a bag of sugar, between us.

Terry: mmmmmmmm… sugarrr

Erica: Focus.

Terry: Ah yes. We are here for our report. Well, I have to admit, I feel like we did a lot more to lose less weight than we did in our first week.

E: Yes, but we did lose weight, which is the main thing. We are down 7 pounds in two weeks. That’s great.

T: And technically, we lost more weight than we need to in a week, to keep our 60 in 60 target alive.  So, let’s recap. What did we do for exercise. You first.

E: I kept on walking the dogs – three long walks. And three gym visits. Also, I increased my speed a bit when walking the dogs. You?

T: Two full rounds of golf, 2 hours of running (still doing 6-minute cycles) and of course, I accompanied you to the gym.

E: Wow. You’re right. We should have lost more weight.

T: Very odd. And I didn’t even cheat once. It’s been 2 weeks since I have tasted chocolate. People in Hershey, Pennsylvania are in danger of losing their jobs. Seems to me, you have a confession to make.

E: OK. I will admit to a tiny, tiny, little cheat. I had 2 sips of wine, during Justin Trudeau’s acceptance speech. But really, it was a historic moment.

T: I couldn’t join you for that. I was on the 16th hour of a 17-hour work day at the time. But I digress. Was that your only tiny, tiny, little cheat?

E: Yes. I have not snacked in between meals, or after supper. When I feel myself getting hungry, I have been drinking a glass of water instead – which seems to work.

T: It seems we have acquired a bit of a following.

E: Yes. A friend of mine in Grande Prairie has embarked on her own challenge.

T: A 60 in 60?

E: She is calling hers a 50 in 30. She and her friend are trying to lose 50 pounds in 30 weeks (combined). But they are using a third party to keep track of the weight loss and they don’t know how each other is doing. Their reward is a trip at the end, which can only be taken if they reach their goal. She said “only knowing (my) half of it will make me work harder.”

T: It’s kind of cool to hear that we are having that kind of effect on others.

E: I think our dog, Tessa, is losing weight, too.

T: Yes, Tessa has joined me for all my runs, but the last one did not end well, for either of us. I decided to reward her with a splash in the creek after our exercise. Silly me. I forgot about current creek conditions, and her affinity for dead fish.

E: Eew.

T: Eew… in a big way. I spent the next 45 minutes scrubbing her in the bathroom.

E: Well, that’s exercise too. Right up there with housework.

T: Yes. It is amazing we did not lose more weight. But I know I will be losing a pound tomorrow.

E: How’s that?

T: I’m getting my hair cut!

E: Ummm, Terry.

T: Yes?

E: You haven’t had a pound of hair since you were 25…. And even that is just a rumour.

T: Ha ha.

T&E: Thanks for reading. We’ll check in again next week!
