A foot ferry won’t succeed right now

Nanaimo and Vancouver waited years and years for Island Ferries to get their act and money together.

Re: Ferry operator has concerns about fairness, Nov. 15

Nanaimo and Vancouver waited years and years for Island Ferries to get their act and money together. It was only after the city and port authority said they were going to ask for other submissions that the Island Ferries folk claimed they were ready to go. Sorry, we were waiting way too long.

Now, with the Clipper Navigation people pulling out because they say they would not be able to make a financial go of it, and that there are no major attractions here, does anyone really think Riverside Marine or Island Ferries could? If anyone could, and with subsidies, it would be B.C. Ferries. However, they are not interested.

The city and others are not dragging their feet. When it comes to continuously running such a service there is only so much money the lenders will lend before they pull the plug and the boats would die in the water.
