A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE – Happy is what you make it

"Remember no man is a failure who has friends." Clarence the Angel from It's a Wonderful Life

Every day counts! You can write that on a piece of paper and put it under a magnet on the fridge door. It’s just the kind of three-worded pearl of wisdom that can keep your attitude in alignment with your goals. The power of positive thinking is what they call it.

But those three words—“every day counts”—take on a whole different, and much larger, meaning when you do something as drastic as telling your boss you’re going to quit and, more to the point, you give them a date. Or listing your house for sale, getting an offer and then signing a piece of paper that, to all intents and purposes, means you are going to be homeless on the same date as you are out of work.

“Every day counts” is right!

I have been living in the Boundary since the mid-’70s. I came to Rock Creek with some friends. We were actually on our way to Saskatchewan to buy a farm, but the natural beauty of the Boundary made us stop and we never got back on the road.

So after 40 years as a local, and nearly 25 in the same house in Midway, I am moving on. Family stuff in Oregon calls me back to where I was born.

As you can imagine, it is not an easy decision to head down there—but sometimes in life, options are few.

Most times, if you accept what you can’t change, you have a better day.

Special K and I once put a sign up on the kitchen wall: “Happy is what you make it; always has been, always will be.”

So I have been working at getting my head wrapped around all of this. One line of thinking I’ve come up with is that some 45 years ago I deserted the U.S. Army during a war that I didn’t believe in; basically I left the U.S. because there was a guy leading the government whom I couldn’t support.

Ironic, isn’t it? Now, 45 years later, I am heading back across the line at a time I can’t find much common ground with the guy we have leading Canada. I must have problems with authority.

But I’ll be on the job until the end of next month; and I can promise that I am planning on making it back to the Boundary one day—home sweet home.

To all my friends and neighbours I can think of few lines better to leave you with than those of Clarence, the guardian angel in the classic movie It’s a Wonderful Life. As the credits start to roll at the end of the film George Bailey finds a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that Clarence had given him.

The inscription read, “Dear George: Remember no man is a failure who has friends. P.S. Thanks for the wings! Love, Clarence.”

Just a few more disjointed keystrokes are all it will take to fill the space this week.

Don’t forget the Greenwood Legion Easter Meat Draw on Saturday at 3 p.m. Proceeds go back to the community; and your odds are way, way better than playing the lottery.

And finally…

NEWS FLASH! The launch of Canadian Agricultural Safety Week was cancelled last week. The reason? Go figure— it was because of safety concerns. It seems a major blizzard had dumped 48 cm (18 inches) of snow on Charlottetown and organizers decided to cancel.
