A new name has its advantages

The Retire Project was a little ahead of its time, but many people could see the end of the pulp mill and the coming erosion of our tax base. They recognized that retirees bring with them considerable economic stability and benefit.

The Retire Project was a little ahead of its time, but many people could see the end of the pulp mill and the coming erosion of our tax base. They recognized that retirees bring with them considerable economic stability and benefit.

Several smaller spin-off projects were considered. At that time, improvements to Highway 19A, the old Island Highway, had just reached the drawing board stage.

Several people advanced the idea in local papers that a name change would have economic advantages. Those seeking a change were roundly criticized. Critics pointed out “the huge costs involved in changing letterheads.” That group still exists today.

Council has begun to consider that “old Island Highway” doesn’t reflect the millions of federal and local tax dollars in improvements, nor does it convey the spectacular entrance to our city. Local newspapers have carried news of this proposed name change: Shoreline Drive, Seashore Drive, Sealane Street or…?
