At the Smithers Council meeting held June 23, Dr. Elizabeth Bastian, GP Oncologist with Northern Health, alerted the councillors to the fact that particulate matter pollution is a public health hazard.
This notification engages the Public Health Act which requires local government to undertake certain specified precautionary measures.
The exact steps that will be undertaken are not completely knowable in advance but it is gratifying to have some prospect of protective action on a current proposal to actually add pollution to our already overloaded airshed.
