A truly fresh outlook for town

The secret is finally out about change in Qualicum Beach

Well the secret is out. The citizens of Qualicum Beach really don’t like change.

This according to the many letters to the press, condemning our recently elected council for having rescinded Mayor Teunis’s self-appointed position on the RDN board.

Well I would think that after all this time spent in that position by our mayor, he would be inclined to welcome a change for himself and for the good of the town.

Are we to believe that he is the only person suitable to represent Qualicum Beach on the board? It has been pointed out that Mr. Willie has no legislative experience, perhaps a good thing, given some of the decisions made in the past by more experienced people.

Maybe, just maybe, some of us are quite pleased with what appears to be a fresh outlook by council.

I for one am looking for certain changes that will keep our town a vibrant community, welcoming people of all ages and all walks of life.

There is an old saying, “if you stop getting better you stop being good.” Very apropos.

One letter in particular from J. Hill, implying that we will now see unprecedented growth, Parksville-like development, and massive debt for future water supplies, is about as outrageous as the statement made my Mr. Tanner when, at a recent all-candidates meeting, he suggested that the very ground we walk on is likely to collapse, sending us into a bottomless abyss, should the Raven Coal Mine development proceed.

But I do have a question for the new council. Why does the mayor or anyone else appointed from the council get $10,000 or more for what I believe is just doing the job they were elected to do, representing the town.

After all, it’s my understanding from listening to the many people who have aspired to elected office, they just want to serve their community, for the good of all and not for personal gain.
