I was looking through old articles regarding the remains of coal mines. Is the City of Nanaimo concerned about the hazards of the old mines collapsing? When some poor soul buys property downtown what if it is overtop of a mine shaft or tunnel? I realize the city has maps of the old coal mines, but how accurate are they? Shouldn’t they me more concerned about keeping the city streets and residents safe from sinkholes rather than sinking $80 million into a new event centre?
