Absence of Leigh Road exit tough on North Langford

Reader laments presence of 'fence to nowhere' between Leigh and Millstream roads

Re: Goldstream Avenue still ignored (Letters, Oct.24)

Goldstream Avenue is not alone. There is also the closed pedestrian crossing of the Trans-Canada Highway at Spencer Road. Together, these two are the cruellest victims of the unfinished Leigh Road overpass, which is still not a full interchange.

It is outrageously cruel that down-Island heavy traffic and transport destined for Langford’s industrial and commercial facilities off Dunford Avenue, as well as other down-Island commuters into Langford, has to make its way, day and night, through curvy and hilly Goldstream Avenue to reach Leigh Road.

It is outrageously cruel that north Langford residents had their pedestrian crossing of the TCH taken away, replaced on the concrete centreline by an eight-foot “fence to nowhere” between Leigh and Millstream roads, but not replaced by a pedestrian overpass into Langford city centre. These two cruelties compose a picture of suffering on both sides of the highway divide.

Research indicates that in B.C., it is unprecedented for a well-used and needed highway crossing to be removed without being replaced, in this case leaving young and old north Langforders stranded behind the “fence to nowhere.”
