I applaud and agree with Charan Gill (Leader letters, Aug. 9) on his appraisal of racist hate crime and would have not written this reply until I read his last paragraph.
The letter was well-balanced and did not target specifically any group in these racist attacks until the last paragraph explicitly targeted “white supremacists” as the group of people that we needed to be educated about.
My son is white and courted a “brown” girl for two years. (I am using the young peoples term when a say “brown”).
He endured a lot of negative racist “white monkey” comments from her grandparents and was always wary of groups of brown kids who threw taunts at him and asked her why she was with a white guy.
Even her family went out of their way to try and introduce her to a better suitor of her own race.
Racism is not a one way street.
All sides need educating.
