Animal rights should become election issue

To the Editor,

Re: Sled dog shock goes deeper, Opinion, Feb. 5.

The recent dog killings at Whister has raised the profile of animal rights issues to a new high.

I think most citizens are shocked to discover how weak our laws protecting animals really are. This has to change. The circumstances regarding the slaying of 100 healthy sled dogs was digusting.

A federal election is imminent. All of our local newspapers usually do an excellent job covering the candidates and the issues. We need to include the question of animal rights issues to every candidate running for federal office.

Every citizen concerned with this issue will be asked to bring this question forward at all candidates meetings.

The outrage over the Whistler killings is evidence that the Canadian people really do care about animal rights issues and we deserve better than we are getting from the federal government.
