Barriere Legion needs help to pay for new roof

Legion says may have to close its doors if can't raise funds to fix roof

To the editor;

We would like to notify all members of this legion that we are in dire need of raising some funds to put a new roof on the flat part of the roof on the legion building.

According to legion bylaws we cannot use funds raised from the meat draws or 50/50s for this purpose.  The money we raise in this way must go to assist charitable organizations in the community.

That just leaves us with the money we earn through the legion bar to do all of our building repairs.

We have applied for several grants, but unfortunately they will not even be considered until March of 2018.

If we get a lot of rain or snow next winter we will have many problems.

We ask all legion members to come forward if they have any input as to how we can raise this money?

We have had three estimates that have all come in at the $20,000 range.

The active members are trying to keep the doors open because the Barriere Legion has been, and continues to be, a big asset to the community.

It is used for bingos(which different charities put on for their project fundraisers), karaoke, anniversary and birthday celebrations, celebration of life gatherings, weekly crib and darts, and a number of other usages by local groups and organizations or individuals.

Some of the groups that Barriere Legion have consistently supported through monetary donations from  our fundraising are: Barriere Search and Rescue, Barriere First Responders, Barriere Fire Department, Barriere Food Bank Society, North Thompson Volunteer and Information Centre, RCACC Cadet Corp, Barriere Hospice, and more.

We truly believe the community will miss this organization if we have to close the doors.

Last year we raised over $20,000 to give to charities and bursaries from 50/50 and meat draws.

The Poppy Fund raised $7,000 which is used to help veterans.

Please, to anyone who can contribute (whatever the amount), your donation will be greatly appreciated.

For myself, I will personally be donating $100 to get this project started.

Our next general meeting will be June 20.  Everyone is welcome.  Bring your ideas.
