In a recent BC Ferries notice announcing 50 per cent vehicle fare reductions from Nov. 16 to Dec. 19., Mike Corrigan, president and CEO of BC Ferries, is quoted as saying:
“As we progress with our Fare Flexibility and Digital Experience Initiative, set to roll out in 2017, we are gaining valuable information on shifting our pricing structure to offer savings based on time of day travel, a model commonly used in the transportation and travel industries.”
Those of us who have no option but to use this maritime section of B.C.’s highway system are compelled to pay Mr. Corrigan $563,000 per annum to magnanimously lower fares to a realistic level. This will only prove we’re more likely to board his floating buses when affordability trumps necessity.
Is “Fare Flexibility and Digital Experience Initiative” this CEO’s attempt to justify his lucrative pay packet and soothe Islanders, angered by the idiocy of thinking BC Ferries is part of “the transportation and travel industries?”
Our ferry routes and highway system are not industries. They are necessities — owned by all, benefiting all and should be paid for by all — like B.C.’s no-fare Interior ferry routes.
