Be open with your doctor

Lorraine Doiron discusses life in Smithers.

We don’t always follow doctor’s orders 100 per cent. You need to tell your doctor if you drink alcohol, smoke, take illegal drugs. Do you take herbs, supplements or alternative treatments? Hard to talk about money problems, bathroom or bedroom issues, suffer from depression or ongoing sadness? Don’t exercise regularly (or at all), eat badly? What about defying doctor’s orders? Memory problems are tough to admit. I worry about aging, forgetting things, always wonder what is normal forgetting, and what is Alzheimer’s. I just read that the singer Glen Campbell has Alzheimer’s. Worry about something that you think is silly or unimportant; it could be important to your health and well being, important for your doctor to know. Best to spit it out, most doctors have likely heard it before. If you feel your doctor is not taking your concerns seriously, it might be time to think about a change.

Friday, July 15, starting at 9 a.m., the Bulkley Valley Museum is hosting a display and parade of antique BMW cars on Main Street, part of Gasoline Valley and the centenary celebration of the first automobile to drive overland from the U.S. to the valley in 1911. Welcome the BMW Vintage and Classic Car Club of America. Cars from across Canada, the U.S., U.K., Switzerland and Germany, dating as far back as 1937.  After the morning rally stroll the Museum’s Culture Crawl and relax in the Old Church gardens. Check out the exhibition at the museum and in the four showrooms at local car dealerships. Hear the story of Perley Sands, an American who drove a 1911 Studebaker from Seattle to Hazelton using deer trails and river beds as his roadway. In the evening visit the fire hall, open 6-to-9 p.m. to visitors with a chance to inspect the big rigs, take pictures, see the fully restored 1937 fire truck. A full day of history, cars, chances for great photos and an opportunity to try some of the great food at our local restaurants.

Traveling this summer? Several European countries now require proof of travel insurance; they may also state a minimum coverage requirement. Go to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade website for a list of countries; note that requirements can change on a regular basis. Once you purchase your policy, carry your declaration page with you as proof of your coverage.

Did you know that the bikini debuted at a Paris fashion show on July 5, 1946? It was named after an atoll in the Pacific Ocean where the world’s first peacetime atomic-weapons test was conducted.
