To the Editor,
I recently went car shopping in Nanaimo and was amazed at the lack of competition and the business practices at many dealerships.
I urge car buyers to be aware of their options and do their research before going shopping. One dealer wanted to charge me $399 for a registration program as well as a $295 dealer overhead charge fee. A simple Google search confirmed that the registration program is of little use if the vehicle is stolen, and likely only cost the dealer $50. Also, despite being advertised as non-negotiable, most dealerships will eliminate a doc fee to close a deal. By saying no to these questionable fees or taking your business elsewhere, you are helping yourself and anyone else in the market for a new vehicle.
