BOUQUET To the fire department, which went through a window to get me back into my house after I was locked out and separated from my baby. You guys truly are everyday heroes.

BEEF To the beefer in Diver’s Lake area who complains about someone following them to see where they take their garbage. Maybe this person wants to see where you dump your stuff so they can recycle it.

BOUQUET To the Island Veterinary Hospital on Bowen Road. Your receptionist was so kind and caring and Dr. Duke provided exceptional care for our two cats.

BEEF To pedestrians. Wear something reflective while out at night – a vest, wrist/ankle strips, blinking light clips, flashlights. It is difficult to see someone in all black.

BOUQUET To the best bosses ever. Thank you for hiring me five years ago and teaching me to be such a good worker. Happy retirement Dave and Wilma and thanks for ‘popping’ into my life.

BEEF To the person who suggested I walk my wife in the mall. She needs fresh air, just like your puppy.

BOUQUET To Mambo’s Pizza for addressing my questions about ingredients. My daughter has food allergies and it’s hard to find places she can eat. We all enjoyed our pizza dinner.

BEEF To Mr. Hazmat Meth House. Sure, care about your health and not the kids 40 feet away? Your company would have been fined and on welfare in Vancouver.

BOUQUET To the organizers of the Zonta Red Gala and the businesses that donated to this worthy charity. A wonderful event with great food, fun and friendly company.

BEEF To the managers at the liquidation who weren’t open-minded to the customer. How can be at peace in the world when you do not make a peace in your store?

BOUQUET To Quality Foods in Beban Plaza for sponsoring the delicious breakfast at the Nanaimo Ladies Curling Bonspiel.

BEEF Depreciation reports by engineers must be reliable. Since when does an engineer deem an eight-year-old roof to have 12 more service years, but a strata management company deems it to need replacing now?

BOUQUET To all the great customers who came into Cranberry Co-op. Your patience during a recent gas mix-up was beyond appreciated.

BEEF ‘Splash over’ of a top-loading washing machine should be considered a design flaw and a manufacturer issue. Approximately $300 in repairs and it is still leaking.

BOUQUET To Central Drugs on Bowen Road for Kevin, the pharmacists, and staff for caring, thoughtfulness and patience.

BEEF To vehicles that run red lights, specifically the white car at the Departure Bay-Estevan roads intersection. Schoolchildren cross here too.

BOUQUET To Ron Foster for his touching gift at my mother’s celebration of life.

BEEF None of us are happy about having to go to Brooks Landing now, but this is the hand we’re dealt. So let’s try for a modicum of patience and politesse in the parking lot, please.

BOUQUET To U-Lock Mini Storage, Bosa Properties University Village and Mid-Island Co-op. Your support means many graduating students will not have to worry about their prom formal wear.

BEEF Nanaimo Lakes and Harewood Mines roads are an appalling and macabre dumping ground for our Island bears. Their rotting corpses lay a metre off the road in the bush at pull-over spots. The poachers must be stopped.

BOUQUET To Nathan at London Drugs Nanaimo North Town Centre. So patient with an elderly couple with a camera return a little too complicated for us to handle.

BEEF To the people who want to change the word ‘empire.’ Would they also try to change the name of British Columbia, the flag of B.C., and even the name of the Empire State Building?

BOUQUET To the Caledonia Clinic doctors, ambulance crew and the emergency room crew who rescued me.

BEEF To people who complain about Nanaimo being a boring place to live. If you’re bored, it’s because you’re boring.

BOUQUET To Tyler Peters of First Shot Contracting and his crew on an outstanding job replacing my roof. Not only does my roof look great but also his expertise in roofing is outstanding and after cleanup did not even know he was ripping off an old shake roof.

BEEF To the elderly woman who ran over my leg with her electric scooter while I was collapsed in the tunnel. I’m now at home with a broken ankle.

BOUQUET To the jukebox poker lady, our servers and the guy with the red beard in charge at The Landlubber Pub for putting up with our loud and obnoxious table – especially Ken – for many Saturday nights.

BEEF To a major fast food place that doesn’t care about its customer at a corporate level. I do thank the friendly staff for caring when a body hair was in my meal.

BOUQUET To Terry and family from Lantzville RV Hauler for all the furniture donated to Noel, Stephen and Judith Munkholm, who lost their home to the mudslide.

BEEF Tired of apologizing for being Canadian. If you don’t like Empire Days or Merry Christmas, you are free to go home. This is part of our culture.

BOUQUET To Cinnamon Joe’s Coffee Window for brightening downtown Nanaimo and serving some truly delicious treats. Awesome cinnamon buns, even better customer service.

BEEF To the beefer who’s “tired of tradition being attacked.” I don’t think the glorification of colonialism counts as a harmless tradition. Celebrate something else.

BOUQUET To the Shaw TV CVI team in Nanaimo for its hard work, positive attitude and community spirit.

BEEF To the liquor store that does not have the moxie to accept empties of brands it does not sell. Cuts into the income of street people and leaves more garbage on the street.
