BOUQUET To the young man who paid for my plant. You made my day. I will pay it forward. There are still gentlemen out there.

BEEF To the poor driver who did a hit and run on my blue Honda Civic at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s main parking lot on March 3. I wish you the same – and some driving lessons.

BOUQUET To the kind, caring and compassionate staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital fifth floor for taking such good care of our dad Ted on his final days here on Earth.

BEEF To those who host public meetings but do not speak loudly enough for everyone to hear. Also, if a question is asked by someone near the front it should be repeated by the host so that all can feel involved in the discussion.

BOUQUET I am overwhelmed by the acts of kindness from the whole staff at Great Canadian Oil Change on Metral Drive. Leaving the car wash, we noticed a flat tire. The spare tire was also flat so the owner took them both to get fixed.

BEEF To Nanaimo school district for sending their top administrators on a conference. Don’t they know that we are already over budget?

BOUQUET To the sidewalk snow shovellers. For some of us you make neighbourhood walks possible.

BEEF To all the inconsiderate people who didn’t bother to shovel the sidewalks in front of their homes or business along Departure Bay Road. Three schools are located within a few kilometres of each other and the sidewalks provide a major walking route for school children.

BOUQUET To the person who wrote the beef on the snow-shovelling bylaw. I thank you as I am one of the people who has to walk on the road.

BEEF To all the automotive dealers who sell too many vehicles without turn signal lights that work. Either that or too many buyers do not purchase the option.

BOUQUET To Quality Foods Beban Plaza. Your support of the Nanaimo Ladies Curling Bonspiel Sunday breakfast was much appreciated.

BEEF To potential landlords who miss out on great, clean, on-time rent paying tenants, by having a no pets/smoking policy. You miss out on having some very good tenants. Just because we have animals and smoke does not mean we’re a detriment to the property.

BOUQUET To Mandie Barker at Target store for her very nice attitude to the customers.

BEEF To the driver of the Hummer who honked at the person in the Jeep because she stopped at the crosswalk for us in front of Rock City Elementary School. This winner then proceeded to give me, my wife, and six-month-old baby the finger.

BOUQUET To the two Good Samaritans, a young lady walking her dog and a gentleman who came to our aid on Cypress Street when we got stuck on the ice.

BEEF To the neighbour who smokes like a chimney on his deck in the early morning hours and coughs and hacks because the lungs are jammed. Have some respect for the people who are sleeping at 5 a.m.

BOUQUET To the person who found and returned my purse from the buggy that I left in the parking lot at Thrifty Foods at Brooks Landing.

BEEF To those who don’t shovel their walks. I complained to the clinic and they looked at me stupidly. People need to get some grits.

BOUQUET to Sarah and Keetah from the Open Connection Telus outlet at the Nanaimo North Town Centre Mall, who were both extremely knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and patient explaining plans and options to my daughter and I. A special thank you to Sarah who went above and beyond the call of duty to arrange the transfer of my daughter’s phone to my plan.

BEEF To the person who shot the Canada goose multiple times. You could have done the community a much better service if you had shot multiple Canada geese one time each.

BOUQUET to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital emergency and ICU staff. What could have ended in a tragedy became a life-saving experience for me. Words are insufficient to express my gratitude to Dr. N. Rogers, Dr. Patterson and Dr. Silva along with all the nursing and support staff.

BEEF To all service stations that charge for air for tires. We pay for water, now air.

BOUQUET to Houle Electric for the wonderful auto safety kit that we won at the Home Show.

BEEF To the business that, for the second time, put my phone number on their online special. I don’t know what to do to make you understand how difficult it is for a handicapped senior to be getting calls from 8 a.m. on.

BOUQUET To Candace Slater, who’s not only my lovely niece, but such a good friend. With wisdom far beyond your years, you’re always a positive inspiration and I am so grateful for you. Relatives by chance, friends by choice.

BEEF To the person who agreed to buy a brand new $900 TV from a fixed income couple for $400, then arrived to pick it up and paid only $350.

BOUQUET To my wife Gerrie, a bouquet of 38 red roses for putting up with me for 38 fantastic years. From Don.

BEEF To the store for selling me an expensive purse only to find out it was a fanny pack. Ten minutes later they refused to refund my money or the difference if I bought another item.

BOUQUET to Susan and Paul Hearsey on the birth of their daughter. We now have a granddaughter.

BEEF To bosses who have no compassion, understanding or acceptance for people taking sick time, especially when the employees aren’t paid for sick time.

BOUQUET to the brilliant person who wrote the beef last week about politicians. If only our elected representatives had the vision and intelligence you so eloquently display, what a beautiful future this planet could have.
