BOUQUET To Dairy Queen for the delicious cake. To Flowers Direct for long-lasting flowers. Sears for the portrait.

BEEF To the three teenage boys in matching skinny jeans – one in turquoise, one in powder blue and one in salmon. You looked like characters from the Strawberry Shortcake cartoon.

BOUQUET to the amazing RBC client who turned in money and papers on Sept. 3. Thank you for the thoughtful and morally generous act of kindness.

BEEF To members of the Royal Canadian Legion pushing to put a cenotaph in Huddlestone Park. What a silly place – a 90-year-old vet won’t like walking down a hill, sitting for an hour and then walking back up to the legion.

BOUQUET To the phone company’s utility van that stopped and let me walk at a crosswalk. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a positive customer experience with the phone company.

BEEF To Canada Post. Sent a thank-you card August 2011. Received it back marked wrong address August 2013. Took two years. Sent a Christmas card to same person December 2011. Also received it back same day in August 2013. Took one and a half years. Just waiting for the card I sent December 2012 to be returned, but it’s only been 10 months.

BOUQUET To the two glowing ‘stick people’ that entertained campers at Rathtrevor Provincial Park on Aug. 24 weekend. You were very entertaining and looked really cool.

BEEF Please move on to more important matters for our community. We can live without passenger rail service on the Island – definitely not a priority.

BOUQUET To Peter and Nicole from Astera Taverna for their many years of great food and service. We also appreciate their acknowledgement of customer loyalty. The professionalism that they and their excellent staff demonstrate has led to the ongoing successful operation of this charming venue.

BEEF To the recycling place whose website claims the depot is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., so I loaded up the car and arrived at 6:15 p.m. The gate was locked and a sign said, “Sorry, today we closed at 5:30 p.m.” Wasted a 10-km round trip. That’s certainly good for the environment.

BOUQUET To the folks at Alternative Groove Skate and Surf Shop, for going above and beyond when dealing with a warranty issue for my husband’s Smith sunglasses. You guys have fabulous customer service.

BEEF To the lady driving the minivan who thinks it’s safe to allow multiple dogs to jump on her lap and all around the van while driving. Did you not see that you almost hit that parked car because of your attention on the dogs? If you can’t confine your dogs safely while driving then leave them at home.

BOUQUET To the person who tracked down our car in a grocery store parking lot to leave a note with smiley face on the windshield. If we forgot our gas cap from filling up it was with the attendant. Wasn’t ours but nice person.

BEEF To any of you that feel the need to not smile back at people, respond rudely or act condescending when asked anything. Honestly, everyone is equal. I hope that one day you find inner happiness.

BOUQUET To the kind gentlemen at the end of Dewar Road for cutting the grass and broom from the side of the road when the city has ignored our street. It was terribly overgrown and your efforts have not been overlooked.

BEEF To the woman parked beside me in the visitor parking at the high school. Why did you start pulling out when my daughter was walking toward my car? Don’t you know that you should not start driving your vehicle while someone is walking toward you?

BOUQUET To the people who helped me and the medical personnel who came when I fell in the parking lot at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and broke my ribs on Aug. 28. You all rock.

BEEF To the drivers coming out of Cavendish Boulevard on to Avonlea Drive. There is a stop sign at Cavendish – this means come to a complete stop, not slow down a little and drive right through while looking both ways.

BOUQUET To Jane and Olivia of Connect Hearing in north Nanaimo for replacing my hearing aids. My aids were destroyed in a tragic float plane accident and they replaced them for free, saving me a lot of grief.

BEEF To the coupon shopper that swore at customers and at the friendly cashier at the checkout. You made an absolute spectacle of yourself over stupid coupons; you should be ashamed.

BOUQUET To the person who turned in my photo prints and book that I left in my shopping cart at Costco. Your integrity is inspiring.

BEEF To the abusive man sitting beside us at the restaurant. Your wife had just been diagnosed with cancer and as she sat crying silently you ate your food and completely ignored her. When you did speak it was with contempt and annoyance. You disgusted us so much we couldn’t finish our meals.

BOUQUET To the service department at Nanaimo Toyota for taking care of me when it took longer than anticipated to service my car. And to Bill for shuttling me around everywhere.

BEEF To the plumbing company that quoted me a price then added charges for steps and removal fee. What’s the point of a quote? Nanaimo is small and word travels.

BOUQUET To the new Mercedes dealership. Courtesy, knowledge and efficiency as well as a non-aggressive sales approach make this an extremely comfortable venue to visit and set a new standard of excellence in the automotive sales area.

BEEF To the servers at the pub. My friend and I waited 20 minutes for our drinks, and when my friend was paying for his dinner he pulled a $50 bill out and went to grab change, you were rolling your eyes. Smile – you might have got a better tip.

BOUQUET To Al for finding and returning our camera that was accidentally left behind at the fish station. We wish you the biggest catch ever on your next trip out.
