I enjoy bluegrass music just as much as the next person, but now I have second thoughts after learning it will be taking place in our community of Meadowood on a large scale (The NEWS, March 24).
People are going to say that here is another example of NIMBY (not in my backyard). Well yes, it is normally not my style to rain on anyone’s parade, but in this case I have to make an exception.
I have never seen anything as underhanded as this. Past e-mails to our RDN area director still remain unanswered. The one sign announcing this bluegrass festival was conveniently placed off road at Galvin Place and posters advertising this event were confined primarily to the Meadowood Store location long before any mention in the local newspaper.
Do the majority or the minority of the residents not have a democratic right to say as to whether or not they are in favour of this event? The RDN will post notices in the paper notifying the public of changes to bylaws and notices of rezoning and people are given the opportunity to voice their concerns. I for one, as well as my upset neighbours, do not appreciate the thought of potentially 3,000 people converging on our community, involving potentially 200 RVs and/or campers on the long weekend in hot and dry July.
Spokesperson Linda Thorburn chuckles and makes reference to only one person who has had offered an objection to this. We have enough traffic to contend with as there is only one road in and one road out and if people living on and off of Baylis Road, Dorman Road and Corcan Road had been better informed, I am sure that there would have been more than one objection.
This could become an annual event involving increased numbers of people attending. Why should a few self-serving capitalizing individuals who are under the impression that they represent everyone in this community be in any position to make decisions of this nature affecting others in our community and putting our homes at risk in an effort to achieve their intentions with or without the approval of our illustrious RDN?
