To the Editor,
Re: It’s no joke, ferry fares just skyrocketed, April 2.
With the recent B.C. Ferries announcement of increased ferry fares, it is time to seriously consider the idea of a bridge connection to Gabriola Island.
A recent letter writer discounts the benefits of a bridge alternative and evidently enjoys paying ever increasing ferry rates.
A bridge connection would eliminate the ferry run and would save B.C. Ferries hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in operating losses. The taxpayers of B.C. should not be expected to continue this subsidy when a bridge is a viable alternative.
When the car ferry is gone, foot and bicycle passengers could continue to be served from the present Gabriola terminus to a location in downtown Nanaimo via a passenger-only ferry.
