Candidates should be residents

I recently went to the Town of Qualicum Beach’s website and under the News & Events column, hit the “2014 – List of Candidates” link.

I was very happy to see the number of participants interested in representing the people of Qualicum Beach as councillor. Nine people wanting to serve the people with four available positions should give the people of Qualicum Beach a wide choice in deciding who we want to represent us.

I was a little saddened to see, however, that according to the list of candidates, three of the nine, or one-third of the people running for council, are listed as not even living within Qualicum Beach.

I do realize that under the B.C. Local Government Act this does not disqualify these people from running, but for some reason I can’t help but feel that my elected representatives should be part of the particular governmental region they represent.

I hope that these candidates will promise the people of Qualicum Beach, that if successful in their bid to gain office, they will also reside in Qualicum Beach, so that they may share with us in the prosperity that their leadership will bring.
