• Candy canes to whoever is responsible for installing the Christmas lights along Fraser Highway near 160th Street. It always warms my heart to see them as I drive home.

• Delicious candy canes to Metrotown Cineplex for letting me keep both Star Wars toppers when I changed my mind about the one I bought.

• A bag of candy canes to all the men and women who have been out grading, salting and brining our streets – without them I would be truly housebound while the snow fell. I hope they have a break over Christmas and enjoy a rest.

• Candy canes to all the families who are putting their petty differences aside this weekend to come together and remember what matters most at Christmas – the love of your family.

• An interurban full of candy canes and thanks to all the volunteers, McDonalds, RCMP, No Frills and, Save-On Foods in Cloverdale for their donations that made our first Fraser Valley Heritage Railway 1916 Christmas train such a success. Merry Christmas, see you in May 2017.

• To the thief or thieves who broke into my ‘87 Escort in White Rock. What were you hoping to find when you climbed into my unlocked car, an Earth-shaking sound system? An accumulation of change? I’m sorry you spent a very cold hour in my beater car on a cold Tuesday morning searching for anything of value, I know how cold our old car gets as my kids and I have dealt with it every day this week. I’m happy to report that you leaving the door open didn’t kill the battery and an important conversation grew out of the minor inconvenience your addiction afforded us. Thanks.

• Lumps of coal to the community college for getting rid of a lot of good programs. This place has gone downhill and their front office is very disorganized. Thanks for nothing.

• Lumps of coal to some parent who complained about a learning centre in Clayton Heights. Sounds like you miss the old management. Unfortunately it has changed hands and is not coming back. They can’t entertain everybody, so either go somewhere else or take care of your own kids. Good riddance.

• Coal to the young people who don’t shovel any snow. All I see is old people shovelling. When I was young, kids shovelled snow when they got home from school so their parents could park their cars on the street. Of course, today’s parents baby their kids into adulthood. Maybe you should give them chores to do instead of just laying around.

• Coal to the Surrey school for not allowing our children to participate in an after-school concert this year! There should be no excuses. You are definitely on Santa’s naughty List!
