Foster Family Month in British Columbia is being celebrated in October.
This awareness campaign was created to recognize the amazing contributions foster families make in our communities across the province.
Currently in B.C., there are approximately 8,100 children in foster care receiving support from caring families that have opened up their homes and their lives to children in need.
Across B.C., children face challenges in their lives and foster families are there to offer support.
The safety, stability and love these foster families provide help many children overcome the obstacles they are facing in life. All of this adds up to helping foster children grow and reach their potential.
I guess you could say that some foster families come full circle because 26 per cent of children in care that are adopted are done so by their foster families. This is a true testament to the strength of the bond created in foster homes in B.C.
There are so many foster families helping children lead fulfilling lives and creating environments that make real differences in children’s lives.
Foster families that open their homes and then their hearts to foster children deserve much recognition and credit for truly changing lives.
I’m a big believer that strong families equal strong communities, and that’s also what foster families are helping build across B.C. and right here in the Cariboo.
Foster families are making positive and meaningful impacts in the lives of so many youth – and for that I thank them.
Donna Barnett is the Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA.
