Chaos at closing time

Re: Sandpiper penalized again, Sept. 5.

This pub has been in this location for years, but times have changed.

This neighbourhood is now primarily residential, with very expensive homes and condos directly behind and adjacent to the pub.

During the daylight hours, the clientele is respectable and there are no issues arising from its operation. However, during the later evening hours, the clientele changes dramatically and no respect is given for the neighbourhood and the residents living in close proximity.

The neighbouring homeowners repetitively sustain sleepless nights with the blaring sound system fracturing the atmosphere until 2 a.m., and then there are the fights, loud cursing sessions amongst drunks, fights breaking out, motorcycles revving engines and urinating through the neighbourhood, as the inebriated head out at closing time, tossing their garbage wherever they wish.

We are constantly having to phone the police to intervene, but they can only do so much since the pub has “entertainment” licensing, which apparently allows them to ruin the lifestyle of the residents who have to get up and go to work each morning.

The only unfortunate thing about the recent pub closure, for the neighbourhood, is that it wasn’t a permanent closure.

This pub operation has outlived its shelf life and is not appropriate for a residential area. The fact that its co-owner is a council member adds insult to the injury and reflects very poorly on council ethics and the whole issue of vested interests and conflicts of interest.
