Cheers for CBC

Resident defends the needs for a national broadcaster

The CBC has been a part of my family for many years. It has made me think, challenging me with different points of view and presenting new ideas.  It has shown me parts of Canada I might never have seen. It has introduced me to Canadians whose voices I might never have heard or understood. It treats me as an intelligent person wanting to understand all sides of an issue.  It continues to keep me company and provide good quality entertainment as I go through my days.

Unlike private broadcasters, whose mandate is profit for its shareholders, the CBC’s mandate is to  give Canadians a platform and  a voice, to connect us from sea to sea to sea, and to keep us informed.

This is worth every penny of my tax dollar and more. Despite governmental claims to the contrary, the CBC has suffered drastic cuts. Check out the graph on  Friends of CBC, at www.friends.ca/. Further cuts to the CBC  will jeopardize the quality of programming that this country deserves, and needs. A vibrant democracy requires an informed citizenry. The CBC is part of that information process. Ah, but wait. Perhaps this is what our current government fears.
