Dear Sir:
I am not sure where to send a write up about the latest I have read about Terrace Council’s time spent on some matters. I’ve read they are considering chickens within city limits.
I live in Terrace, and have for almost 45 years, chickens seem almost a backwards step in time here.
Is this a city or a farming community. I happen to live beside a home owner that does all ready have chickens in his yard and, of course, the rooster.
As the day get longer the birds get louder, earlier. It is quite a racket and no, you can’t sleep with the windows open in the summer as the birds start when the daylight starts, very early.
The story states that it has been illegal to harbour the birds since 1991, I guess someone forgot to tell my neighbour that.
This brings up another question. Who is to monitor the chickens and their owners? The city can’t keep loose dogs in their owners’ yards, why would one want to add another problem to a problem.
Can you imagine the way it will look if everyone started to raise chickens. The smell would be great, the mess would be even better.
Do the chicken houses need building permits? It states that Terrace is trying to promote home-grown reliable food sources, what about bacon and eggs, may as well allow pigs and maybe a cow just to finish off the meal.
Going even farther, why not save gas and have horses in each yard too.
Hey, the old Co-op building would make a good chicken coop; get some use out of it. It’s even ready to use to house those feathered friends.
I would think they should tackle the dogs running loose problem in most areas in this town. This doesn’t even touch on the stray cats and dogs defecating in my front yard from the neighbours. I don’t even have a pet as I rent but I am faced with cleaning up the mess from these strays.
I see a lot of people walking by this area behind Wal-Mart with their pets not leashed either running or walking behind them, and none stop to clean up that mess these pets create.
It would be nice to take a walk in the trails without having to watch where a person steps, or even let the kids play in the front yard, or city parks without that same problem. How many just open the front door of their house and let their pets run throughout the neighborhood to do their morning thing? Lots!
Maybe Terrace could be Farm-Ville.
