Citizens need to wake up about wildlife

Thank you for publishing the article with the informative message from the Conservation Service.

Citizens need to wake up and pay heed to the issues of feeding wildlife, including seagulls and other birds.

All too often, the fodder being fed to these species is far from their natural diet and detrimental to their health. Throwing out white bread crumbs and other ‘substances’ equally devoid of nutrients, etc., needs to be discouraged and stopped.

We see individuals engaging in this practice every day in our local park and boat launch area. The seagulls have obviously become habituated, yet their natural food source is abundant and right at hand — along the seashore and within the local ocean waters.

It’s time there was educational signage posted to emphasize this point and put things right.
