Climate change

Resident says there is a need to address the impacts of climate change

In his response to a letter written by Howard Brown, Bob Reid seems to have his facts backwards.

He appears to be unaware that virtually all reputable scientists especially climatologists are convinced not by opinions, but by solid scientific evidence (including glacier cores) that humankind is largely responsible for the present frightening levels of global warming.

Climate change deniers are the ones who have often been called members of the “flat earth society” because they are considered to be as blind as those in the past who refused to believe the earth was round.

Mr. Reid may not have noticed that climate change has been widely blamed by researchers for causing hugely damaging effects in Canada and around the world.  We are experiencing far more wild fires and floods than ever before as well as frequent extreme weather events.

In the north the permafrost is melting rapidly which makes it difficult to build or to maintain existing infrastructure. Our glaciers are disappearing at an alarming rate and now our water is starting to disappear also. These are just a few of the many negative consequences which have already cost billions of dollars.

I disagree that anything we do to combat rising emissions will not work and is a waste of money. Whatever the cost, a determined effort needs to be made as our own survival could be at stake. A serious shortage of water would make it almost impossible to sustain life, and if the environment of the earth continues to degrade the human race and many other species will face a very bleak future.

What a shame we can’t lay the blame for this disaster on others, but unfortunately we in the developed world have no one to blame but ourselves.
