Closure request due to accidents

Editor: In response to a recent letter published in The Times (March 16) about the 200 Street and 0 Avenue intersection, I would like to comment by letting your readers know that I and other residents in the High Point Estates sub-division have resided in Langley for many years.

Our children attended local schools and participated in community events in Langley, so it is very disturbing to read comments stating they allowed people to move into their neighbourhood, or to quote exactly “my neighbourhood.”

As for the reasons we requested to keep the entrance at 0 Avenue closed, it is not as your reader suggests, to exclude others from the neighbourhood.

In fact, it has been a real pleasure meeting other nearby residents from outside of our subdivision along the walking and riding trails. Many we know on a first-name basis.

The reason for the request was the number of accidents we have had on 200 Street. In addition, we have horse and pedestrian trails crossing both the top and bottom of this road.

In addition, we seem to be a target for the many thieves, which prompted us to contact the RCMP on numerous occasions. They also supported this entrance being closed.

Initial development plans are not without flaws and council needs to be flexible and use common sense and review and make changes when needed. It seemed logical to me to request to keep this entrance closed, as it did to many of the local riders who use the trails.

Increasing traffic on an already dangerously busy road, just for the convenience of a few, does not make sense. We are thankful that council made the decision to support this petition and are hopeful that your reader will have a better understanding that safety needed to come before convenience.
