Re: “Foreign doctor in Clearwater feels in Catch-22 situation” in April 25 issue.
I write you this letter in response to the author’s unfortunate misinterpretation of the College’s requirements for registration and licensing to practise medicine in B.C. It is incorrect to say the College requires that an applicant be a permanent resident, as a number of licensed physicians in B.C. do not hold that status.
International medical graduates are eligible for registration in B.C. provided that they are legally entitled to work in Canada (work permit) and have all the necessary credentials and qualifications. There is no requirement to be a permanent resident.
More information about the application process is available on the College website. H.M. Oetter, M.D.
